Reusable Fruit & Veg Bags Made from Recycled Plastic Bottles
The war on plastic is still raging on, but one supermarket giant has made a big difference by rolling out reusable fruit and veg bags made from recycled plastic bottles.
As part of its commitment to to reduce plastic packaging by 50% by 2025, Sainsbury’s has launched a “programme to accelerate change”, which will involve introducing refillable packaging and switching to alternative materials.
Now, instead of using plastic produce bags for loose fruit and vegetables, customers can choose to either bring their own containers into store, or to buy a reusable drawstring bag made from 100% recycled materials for 30p.
Sainsbury’s has also launched water refill stations at hundreds of stores across the UK, and has also announced Reserve Vending Recycling trials which let customers return plastic bottles and drinks cans in exchange for coupons.
The bags were spotted by shopper Skye Ellie Goss, 20, a vegan from Eastbourne.
Skye, who runs vegan Instagram account @salsaguac, told LatestDeals.co.uk: “I absolutely love everything environmentally friendly and seeing these made me so happy! Seeing things like this is amazing. It’s a step in the right direction and best of all, it’s made from recycled bottles that would have ended up in landfill.”
Tom Church, co-founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, says: “We’re glad to see that Sainsbury’s is the latest big supermarket to embrace the plastic-free movement and provide real alternatives to plastic bags.
